About this test
What does the Hepatitis A Immunity Test identify?
There are two types of antibodies against the Hepatitis A virus (HAV).
IgM (immunoglobulin M)is the first antibody the body produces following exposure to a virus. This test is employed to identify HAV infection in individuals showing signs of acute Hepatitis, including jaundice, dark urine, pale stools, fever, and loss of appetite. A specific test for HAV IgM antibody confirms a current or recent HAV infection.
In contrast, IgG (immunoglobulin G)antibodies appears later, increasing over several months, and typically persists for life, providing protection against reinfection by the same virus. It also develops post-vaccination. A positive HAV IgG result indicates a past infection or vaccination.
A total HAV antibody test detects both HAV IgM and HAV IgG antibodies. If the IgM test is negative, a positive total HAV antibody test suggests a past infection or vaccination.
The Hepatitis A Immunity Test detects levels of both IgM and IgG in your blood.
