About this test

Thyroid Peroxidase antibodies (TPO antibodies) are elevated in the blood if autoimmune thyroid disease is present. Often elevations in this auto-antibody level precede changes in levels of thyroid hormones in the body - so this test can act as an early warning system for those at risk of future thyroid underactivity (hypothyroidism) or indeed overactivity (hyperthyroidism).
