About this test

Formerly known as Faecal Occult Blood (FOB) test, this is an updated, even more accurate version of the highly sensitive screening test that checks for hidden (occult) blood in the stool (faeces). Even traces of blood can be detected - which if present can lead to early diagnosis of malignancy (cancer) of the bowel. The NHS now offer this test to everyone in the UK over the age of 55, every 2 years. Bowel cancer is a serious but very treatable condition if detected early enough - ideally before any symptoms arise. Although less common before the age of 50, there are many incidences of the disease diagnosed in younger people too.
