Folate is a B vitamin important to the regular functioning of the body. Folate in its natural form is also called Vitamin B9 or Folic acid. It is found in a wide variety of foods and is also one of the most common vitamins (as Folic Acid) included in multi-vitamin tablets. Folate or Folic acid in its natural form, plays several important roles in the body, from helping to form your genes, produce healthy red blood cells and is also critical in the development phases of pregnancy. Folic Acid is also important in the metabolism of homocysteine, which is an amino acid implicated in cardiovascular disease. Thus, Folic acid appears to have protective qualities against heart issues as well as against certain cancers.
One of the most important functions of Folic acid is to protect developing embryos against neural tube defects including a condition called spina bifida. All expectant mothers are encouraged to monitor their levels of Folate and to take appropriate supplements to ensure the healthy development of their unborn child. So important is the link between Folic acid and neural tube defects, that some countries around the world, notably the United States and Canada, have taken the step of mandating Vitamin B9 supplementation of bread flour to ensure everyone consumes a sufficient level of this important vitamin.
Folic acid is an important nutrient that our bodies require to function correctly. We can absorb Folate from the foods that we eat and from any vitamin supplements that we take. However, our diets and busy lifestyles often overlook the foods richest in Vitamin B9, so we may be deficient in this vitamin and not realise it. This is particularly concerning for women planning to have children as a mother deficient in Folate is at risk of giving birth to a baby suffering from life threatening neural defects.
For men, Folate may play an important role in breaking down a chemical called Homocysteine. This amino acid has been linked to cardiovascular risk when levels of it are high. If Folic acid levels are reduced, then there is not enough of it to fully act on the levels of Homocysteine leading to elevated levels and a consequential increased risk of cardiovascular diseases.
The Better2Know Folate test requires a blood sample. The blood sample is collected from your arm. This test requires that a nurse or trained phlebotomist takes your blood sample as it requires a certain volume of blood that cannot be self-collected for a finger prick. Once your nurse has collected your blood sample, the blood tube needs to be correctly labelled with your details and returned to our fully accredited laboratory for analysis. All the materials your nurse needs to collect and return your sample are included in your test kit. Better2Know can arrange for a nurse to visit you so just give us a call on the number above and we will do the rest.
Your blood sample will be tested for Folate, also called Folic Acid. This vitamin will be tested for in your blood serum. This test will give you a good indication of whether you have the correct levels of Folate in your blood, or whether you require additional supplementation.
If ordered before 4pm Monday-Friday, your test kit will be mailed the very same day using first class postage and should arrive the next working day, depending on your location.
Your results will be available within one day after your sample arrives at the lab. Better2Know will provide you with a confidential login code for our secure online patient login area, where you will be able to view your results once they are available. A member of our team will also contact you directly, to inform you when the results are in.
If your results show that you are deficient in Folic Acid, you should consider speaking with a doctor to get more information on your condition. If you are a woman, planning to get pregnant, or think you may already be pregnant, then you should seek medical advice before taking any additional supplements. Better2Know can make you an appointment with a private doctor in your local area, or you can visit your own GP.
Select the 'Add to Basket' button and proceed to checkout to order your Folate test. If you require assistance do not hesitate to call, we are able to complete your order over the phone. If you have any further questions use the phone number above, our team is happy to help.

Concerned about your vision, skin health, or immune function? This test measures vitamin A (retinol) levels, an essential nutrient that supports eye health, immune response, and cell growth.
This test measures ferritin levels in the blood, correlating directly with total body iron stores. Ferritin is more sensitive at recognising iron deficiency than a simple iron test.
A group of blood tests used to assess iron status in the body, helping to diagnose iron deficiency, iron overload, or anaemia-related conditions.
