Testosterone Test

What is testosterone?

Testosterone is a sex hormone; it is the primary sex hormone produced by men, but women also produce small amounts of testosterone in the ovaries.

In women, having an excessive amount of testosterone can result in excessive body hair (hirsutism), thinning of the hair on your head, weight gain, menstrual irregularities and are often associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In pubescent girls, a high level of testosterone can delay the onset of puberty and the start of the menstruation.

In men, testosterone is produced in the testicles, and regulates sex drive, controls bone mass, fat distribution, muscle mass, strength, development of facial hair, and the production of red blood cells and sperm. Levels of testosterone start to decline naturally in men after the age of 30. Heavy alcohol consumption, liver disease, and steroid use can result in abnormally low levels of testosterone. This can lead to erectile dysfunction (ED) and/or infertility, loss of muscle mass and changes in body fat distribution. A low testosterone level in boys of pubescent age can delay puberty.

Why should I consider a testosterone test?

The Better2Know testosterone test determines your testosterone levels which may be responsible for the symptoms above that you have been experiencing that do not have a clear cause. For men, this could be worries about ED and/or decreased sex drive, and for women it could be a concern about PCOS.

How is the test carried out?

A single blood sample is needed for the testosterone test to be carried out. At one of our Better2Know clinics, you will be invited in to take a blood sample. Once your blood sample has been collected by a trained clinician, we will send your blood sample to our fully accredited country laboratory for analysis.

How will I receive my test results?

Your test results will be ready to view very quickly - as soon as one working day after your sample arrives at our laboratory. A member of the Patient Services team will contact you directly to notify you that all your results are ready. You will then be able to access your results using the secure patient login area of the Better2Know website.

What should I do with my results?

If your test reveals abnormal testosterone levels for your gender and age, you should see a GP or another healthcare professional. You may be prescribed medication or asked to complete further tests. If you have any concerns about the results, Better2Know, can arrange a private doctor consultation for you across the country. If you would prefer you can always contact your own GP.
