SHBG Blood test.
1 biomarker as listed by Better2Know.
The SHBG protein is mainly produced by the liver and released into the bloodstream. SHBG binds to sex hormones testosterone and oestrogen and transports them in the bloodstream in an inactive form. These two hormones can be found in both women, and men, but at different levels. In men, about 45% of testosterone is tightly bound to SHGB whilst its about 70% in women. These gender differences of SHBG and other proteins binding to the sex hormones accounts for male and female characteristics.
Therefore, slight changes from normal SHBG levels can cause certain symptoms. For example, in adult men, SHBG levels can be used to find the reason for a decrease in sex drive and erectile dysfunction. Whereas in women, even small increases in testosterone can cause symptoms such as the absence of monthly periods (amenorrhoea), infertility, acne, and increased hairiness (hirsutism).
If you are concerned about any of the symptoms above, then an SHBG test could be suitable for you. Our SHBG test can show whether an increase or decrease in testosterone is the reason behind your symptoms.
Our SHBG test detects the levels of SHBG from a small blood sample. Once we have collected your blood sample it will be sent to our accredited country laboratory for fast and efficient analysis.
Within one working day of your blood sample arriving at our laboratory, your test results will be ready to view. Your results are extremely accurate and 100% confidential. A member of our Better2Know health advisory team will contact you as soon as your results are available. You will be invited to logon to our secure patients' results area, where you can access your results at any time.
Our SHBG test will help you to understand the levels of SHBG in your blood and what action to take next. Better2Know has a broad network of skilled doctors around the country and can organise a private consultation before or after your results become available.
