About this test

What will the Homocysteine Test identify?

This test measures homocysteine levels in the blood. Homocysteine is a marker for cardiovascular disease risk, and can also identify insufficient levels of vitamins B12, B6 and folic acid. Homocysteine is recognised to be an early indicator of your risk of experiencing heart disease, heart attack and stroke. Homocysteine levels are particularly significant if you have other cardiovascular risk factors including high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, or elevated levels of other lipids. Homocysteine is a sulphur-containing amino acid normally found in small amounts in all body cells. It is produced when methionine, an essential amino acid obtained from your diet, is metabolised. In healthy cells, homocysteine is quickly converted to other products.

Folic acid (folate), a B vitamin, is necessary to metabolise homocysteine, while Vitamin B12 helps keep folate active, maintaining low homocysteine levels.

A high level of homocysteine in your blood should be investigated and your risk of cardio vascular disease assessed.

Homocysteine Test

Check your homocysteine levels with this simple at-home blood test. Elevated homocysteine can be linked to deficiencies in vitamins B12, B6, or folate, and may be associated with an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and certain other conditions.
