Who is the Blood Group test for?

The Blood Group test is designed for people who want or need to know what their blood group is. Knowing your blood group is useful if you are planning to donate blood, or if you want to understand what other blood groups you are compatible with in the event you require a blood transfusion. Knowing your blood group can also help predict the concentration of other proteins in the blood that can influence how your blood will behave in the event of an injury.

What does the test include?

Your Blood Group test will determine the following:

• There are four main blood groups which are determined by the genetic traits that you inherit from your mother and father. The main blood groups are A, B, AB and O.
• Each of these blood groups can be either RhD Positive or RhD Negative. The Rh system describes whether your red blood cells carry the RhD antigen. If they do, then your blood group is "positive". If they do not carry this antigen then you are "Negative".
• Thus, with four individual blood groups, with each being either Positive or Negative, there are a total of 8 different blood groups possible.

What can I expect at my appointment?

This Blood Group test will be conducted by a qualified medical professional at a clinic of your preference. Your sample will be collected in a discreet consultation room where the process will be explained to you.

What happens to my sample?

Once we have taken your blood sample, it will be dispatched to our accredited laboratory for analysis. The expected turnaround time for this Blood Group test is approximately two days from the moment the laboratory receives your sample.

How will I receive my test results?

Once the analysis has been completed, your test results will be securely uploaded to your dedicated online Patient Area. Additionally, you will receive a notification through your chosen method of communication, whether it be a phone call, email, or SMS.

What should I do with my test result?

Knowing your blood group and RhD status is very important information. You may have been asked what your blood group is by another medical professional and if so, you should share this test result with them. You should also carefully note your blood group and keep that information with you at all times, in your wallet, purse or on your person.
